a vintage photo shoot

I got asked to model for a photo shoot, by my dear friend Kat from Always and Forever Photography.  I absolutely adore Kat's photography, not only is she the sweetest and so fun to be around, but you see little bits of her in every picture she takes, and I love that. I love when you immediately know who is play the piano without even turning around, because you know the sound their music makes, or you see a painting and instantly you know who created it just by the strokes of the paint, it is that way with Kat's photography. I remember the first time I visited her blog she had posted a family photo session. Everyone was in pj's outside in the most glorious tent made of old quilts, playing board games as the sun went down. It was the most beautiful family shoot I had ever seen and I knew in that moment when I have my little family someday, she will be taking our family pics! She has such a wonderful way of making you feel so comfortable before she ever snaps a picture and incorporates the little things you love into the pictures, whether it is old records or perfume bottles or your grandma's quilt.

Kat asked if we could incorporate a vintage feel to the makeup, hair and clothing for the shoot, and I was so excited about the theme she was creating, I think I brought my whole closet with me the day of the shoot! We both love anything vintage and the little antique shop near her house agreed to let us spend the afternoon among their old things, dressing up and taking pictures. SO excited to share a few with you! For the rest of the shoot and more photography by Kat, stop by her blog!

I love birthdays

Happy 22nd Birthday to me! This birthday reminds me of a story from my community college days with my best friend Mary Kathryn.

We had heard about this guy who talked to walls and people who weren’t really there, basically he was crazy, but harmless and his name was Ryan. But we had never seen him and we had been going to college for almost 2 whole semester. So he was like the phantom crazy guy. The very last day of school I just had one gift left to hand out to a professor and I stopped inside the L.A. building to write in the card. Mary Kathryn was telling me a story when all of a sudden, out of no where, we hear, “Hey you cute, both ya’ll are.” I turned around and there he was. “Oh you got a lil’ baby face, how old you guys?” we didn't tell him we were sixteen, we just stared at him. “Are you 21? I know your not 22!  Seriously, how old you guys?” And still we stared. “Do you know the bad thing about being 21? Your siblings want you to go buy them alcohol. But you say NO! How old you guys? For real...are you 21? Do you want to come stay at my house for the summer? Do you come from dat way or dis way? You probably come from dat way. Well, you take dat lil’ road, you know what I am talkin’ bout? Then you will see dis car, hail damage on the left fender, and your there. We gonna have fun” And with that he waved and walked away. We laughed and then I looked at my note of gratitude and it read “have a summer.” So much for my sweet note! I stopped by the college the other day for transcripts and he was still there…talking to a wall. Some things never change....I miss those days that I thought would last for ever, it seems like yesterday I was worried about Algebra and thought 22 was forever away!

GB tribal print wedges from my sweet family, my mom wasn't too crazy about them!
But I just adore them.

Silver Dusk iridescent highlighter powder from MAC. Completely in love with this
sheer shimmer.

My mom found these vintage pink and white ruffle saucers six months ago and
kept them hidden away from me all that time! They match my pink and white ruffle plates!

Bobbi Brown is wonderful, let's all agree about this. Ok? Ok! Nude Pink and Pale Pink blush!!!
Being 22 is fun!

I'm going to be famous one day makeup

As you know, I love any excuse to play in makeup so when my baby sister decided to audition for some acting gigs, I was so happy to get her ready for the head shots. I always call her my baby sister, but as I was putting her makeup on I realized...gosh, she is not a baby anymore! 13 and ready to take the world by storm! Will she be famous??? Stay tuned...

A little preview from the photo shoot...pictures by MK, makeup and hair by me

Obviously, for her age and the nature of the photo shoot, the makeup needed to be extremely minimal, while still highlighting her beautiful features. The following is a list of the products I used and how I applied them.

Neutrogena Light Night Cream- hand applied to the whole face
Clinique Acne Solutions liquid makeup in 01 fresh alabaster- hand applied and really worked into the skin for a sheer lightweight look (this product is on the dry side, as it is meant to dry out and control acne, while not irritating the skin, not ideal for individuals with dry skin)
Clinique french vanilla eye shadow- applied with an eye shadow brush to the lids, just to even the skin tone and take out any redness
Maybelline Unstoppable eyeliner in onyx- lined the upper water line
L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes mascara in black- applied to upper lashes and bottom (the bottom was just a quick coat because I didn't want them clumpy, just lightly defined)
I mixed a pink blush and light bronze and softly applied through the cheek bone
Clinique Almost Powder in 02 neutral fair- applied where needed
MAC Lipglass in Wee Coquette- applied concealer to the lip first to cancel out the natural redness and then applied the lipglass to give her lips a very sheer glossy look

*Hair- Her hair is thick and naturally straight, I quickly ran a straightener through the front section to take any curl out of the ends of her bangs. I used BED HEAD manipulator quite generously, first working it through my fingers and then through her hair, pulling the front section forward and to the side and really giving it texture.
